London employers buy employment law advice from three very different places: City and West End law firms, boutique employment law specialists, and national HR providers with insurance-backed cover. This page compares the employer-side firms and providers covering London, what they charge, and how to shortlist them.

London has more employer-side employment law capacity than anywhere else in the UK, which makes shortlisting harder rather than easier. The market splits three ways: City and West End law firms billing hourly, boutique employment law specialists in London working on fixed fees per matter, and national HR providers offering insurance-backed cover from a London office. All three describe themselves as employment law advice in London, and they are not comparable on price alone.
Expect the widest range in the country. Senior consultancy and advisory days in central London commonly run £800-£1,500, hourly rates at City firms sit well above regional equivalents, and retained employer cover bundled with HR support starts around £200-£600 a month. Fixed fees are increasingly normal for defined work: a settlement agreement, a contract suite, a redundancy exercise. Ask for the fee basis in writing before instructing, and ask who does the work rather than who pitches it.
Claims by London staff are heard at London Central, London South or East London depending on where the employee worked, and hearing lists in London run longer than most regions. That matters commercially: preparation time, counsel's fees and attendance are the line items that separate quotes from otherwise similar employment law firms in London. Ask each firm which venue it appears at most often, who attends, and whether preparation time is capped.
Judge on four things: whether your adviser is a qualified solicitor and who supervises the file; whether tribunal representation is inside the fee, insured, or billed separately; recent experience in your sector, which in London means finance, professional services, tech, hospitality or the public sector; and how fast you get a substantive answer, not an acknowledgement. Featured partners on this page are labelled as such; everything else is ordered on evidence.
Employment law cover is really two products: advice before you act, and representation once a claim lands. Buy both deliberately, because the second is where London quotes diverge most. We reviewed 4 employment law advisers covering London, none of them headquartered in the city. Indicative local pricing runs £250-£600 a month retained or £800-£1,500 a day for project work.
London employment is concentrated in financial and professional services, technology, creative and media, and the deepest concentration of solicitor-led HR practices in the country, so you can buy legal advice and day-to-day HR from the same firm. Tribunal claims are heard at London Central, London South or East London. Ask each provider on this page how it has handled employment law support for employers in financial and professional services specifically.
