HR consultancy is project work bought by the day or by the piece: a restructure, a TUPE transfer, a pay and grading review, a culture or engagement programme, or an independent investigation. You are buying senior judgement on a defined problem, not ongoing cover.

How it is priced: Day rate, or a fixed fee scoped against a defined deliverable. Day rates commonly run £500-£1,500 depending on seniority and city. London and the South East sit at the top of that range, with £800-£1,500 typical for a senior consultant in central London, while £500-£800 is more usual in the North and Midlands. Smaller consultancies also sell light-touch retained access from around £300 a month, which is a different product from project days.
Ranges are indicative of what UK employers commonly pay and are not quotes. City pages carry local bands where they differ.
Employers who already handle routine HR but face a one-off event with real legal or financial exposure, and organisations wanting an independent view where an internal investigator would not be seen as impartial.
Employers who need someone to answer a question every week. Buying that as consultancy days is the most expensive way to get it.
